This is how it works...
For a "demo" I would concentrate on 3 to 4 tracks at a time (most labels/agents will have made up their mind by track 2). Most bands that I have recorded have done this over 3 short sessions.
- Session 1 always consists of recording the drum takes along with anything you want to do "live" (this normally means bass or 1 guitar) or just the drums on their own, it's up to you. If you want to do all the guitars live this is no problem (I can record 16 tracks at once, but remember about 10 of these will be for the drum mikes!!). I like to get 4 takes of every song. I will then take the recordings back to my flat to "comp" the drumtracks (editing takes together to make sure any mistakes are missing and all the good bits are in the final versions)
- Session 2, we overdub all the bass/guitar/keys parts that are missing (could be all the guitars or just solos etc. depending on what we captured during session 1). This is done at my flat. Vocals aren't so easy to do at the flat - I've had too many complaints!! So I normally get the band to do vocals in the same rehearsal space we did the drums.
- My studio is a "mobile studio" so I only bring what I need to record that day, the reason I say this is because I only work with HEADPHONES outside the flat!! Some bands have expected me to bring speakers and a monitoring system like you would find in a proper studio. This can't be done, meaning whilst doing the drum takes, playback is via headphones.
Proper pre-mixes will be done by me at home so you can hear the drums properly on CD before we do guitars/vox.
The best location for the sessions to take place is in your usual rehearsal space, and hopefully we can do the vocals here too...Once all tracking has been done I will do final mixes onto CD. You can then come round to change any of the mix not to your taste and then I'll do some CD'rs and masters.
I normally give the band all the session files* on split DVD-R's so they can change bits later at another studio if need be.
